About three years ago, rebels began a campaign to oust Liberian President Charles Taylor, who won office in 1997 after a grisly civil war that left about 200,000 people dead. The current fighting has displaced more than 1 million Liberians. U.S. Forces are now beginning to flow and the small strip named Sprigg Payne outside of Monrovia, Liberia is bustling with activity. C-130s and CH-47s along with UH-60s comprise the first elements of the force deployed from Spain. For now cargo is flowing and the forward units will establish security around the capital city. This is now the 'African Wedge' called Shining Express.
