| Vampire T Mk.55 |
| The De Havilland Vampire was the aircraft that brought the South African Air Force into the Jet age. It came into service in South Africa in 1950, replacing the Spitfire and served as front-line fighters until 1956, when the Sabre replaced them. They were then used as trainers until 1972 when the Impala (AERMACCHI MB326) finally replaced them. Although a few examples are still flying in South Africa, they have been retired from active duty. Static examples can be seen in the SAAF museum. A variety of models were produced, including this twin-seater (side-by-side) T. Mk.55 trainer. This aircraft (Nr. 277) is still flying, operated by the South African Air Force Museum in Pretoria. |
